Ran, a third grade teacher and father of a baby girl is responsible for some of the most clever lyrics to come out of the Bay since Too Short moved to Hotlanta in '93. "The Get Up" a mid-tempo thumper features the hook, "This is for them so-called, no style prod-i-gies that try to follow me/ comin' out the alley aimin' for the king of Cali." For most modern MCs that's a tongue twister, never mind a hook. But track after track Ran delivers insightful verses abutted by complex choruses that require considerable breath control.
A Tribute to Sky City is yet another example that hip-hop isn't dead. On the contrary, it blanketed the earth while you were busy tuning out to Sirius Satellite Radio. Musicians like this deserve more shine but even without it you get the impression that Ran isn't trippin'. After all he's got kids to teach and a daughter to raise. Finally, an MC who understands the true meaning of keepin' it real.
