J.Rawls & Middle Child - Rawls & Middle [2008]

The first full length project from hip/hop and r&b producer J. Rawls and songstress Middlechild offers a unique blend of atmospheric grooves, vintage hip hop samples, and plenty of hooks. The first single "Til The Sun Comes" gets things off to a nice start while standout tracks include the laid back summer madness of "Put Somethin' In The Air", the easy like sunday morning anthem "Useless", the potent "Music Over Madness", and the positively written "My Dreams". Middlechild even drops a few funky rhymes in the interlude "Get Ghost" which draw comparisons to Lauryn Hill and Estelle. On the production tip, J. Rawls manages to keep the flow of the project with solid break beats and vibes that will remind you of hip hop's glory days.

"The Essence Of..." is a brilliant LP of any gifted producer's ilk. Trust me, J. Rawls can easily surpass most of his contemporaries with this debut. It strings together a cast of diverse emcees who all contribute something solid to each track. Substantive collaborations on this album are "Far Away," with Mr. Complex and Apani B. The Fly Emcee, "Meniscus" featuring Dose-One and Fat Jon of Five Deez, "Cold Turkey" with Capital D. and Mr. Greenweedz (not to mention an intoxicating jazz loop) and "Nommo" with the Unspoken Heard.
J. Rawls is well on the way to solidifying a rep as a formidable producer capable of crafting beats on a par matched by peers like Pete Rock, Diamond and Jay Dee. J. Rawls has been bringing the heat on outside acts recently, evidenced by his work on the Black Star, Unspoken Heard and All Natural albums (just to list a few). Simply put, "The Essence of..." displays J. Rawls' deft utilizations of jazz samples, overriding crescendozs (like the warping, wailing effect on "Far Away" and the dizzying double piano incorporatin on "Cold Turkey") and head nodding snares.

Little Brother And Justus For All [2008]

The Hall of Justus Music Group is proud to present Phonte and Big Pooh's return as Little Brother with the official release of ...And Justus for All. The North Carolina duo and founding members of The Justus League have made a major impact on Hip Hop by successfully combining the classic 90s feel of such groups as A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul with production and subject matter that remains current with the times.
